On a sloping property in Pepper Canyon, a housing project for 619 students was commissioned. The complex was to house 619 students in apartments ranging from double to quintupple occupancy, laundry rooms, and private and public gathering spaces. The master plan is based on a village concept, with a human scale. Well-planned landscaping allows students to congregate, or to retreat to secluded spaces for study and meditation. Benches and a veranda type access invite students to use the small courtyards. The site is also flexible enough to serve as a large public event area. Mailboxes, snack facility and laundry are incorporated into the main structure, providing a central meeting place for students. To meet the tight budget. Elevators were avoided. All handicap rooms are located on the first floor. Cost: $14 Million |
