Japanese Lyceum In Mexico

To serve the needs of the growing temporary Japanese population, this kindergarten through high school education center was conceived to continue Japanese traditional education to facilitate a child's return to school in Japan and to incorporate Mexican cultural studies as an enrichment.

The topography of rock mounds and drop offs added dynamism to the project which utilized the contours and curves of the landscape. The oblique angle of the exposed concrete and brick buildings relates to a need for sunny classrooms and dictated the angle of the other buildings.

The project, consisting of classrooms, dormitories, auditorium, and athletic facilities, is organized around four squares: 1) An access square 2) A gathering/distribution square containing the symbolic Lyceum tower 3) A school square serving the classrooms 4) A dormitory square. Each building has its own garden space and unique features.
